REAL ID Deadline is Coming: What You Need to Know

If you're planning to travel within the United States by air, there's an important update you need to be aware of. Beginning May 7, 2025, the U.S. government will require travelers aged 18 and older to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card to board domestic flights. If your ID doesn’t meet the REAL ID standards, you won’t be allowed through airport security—so now’s the time to get prepared!
What is a REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 as part of a post-9/11 effort to improve the reliability and security of state-issued identification. A REAL ID is a driver’s license or identification card that meets federal security standards. Starting May 7, 2025, these IDs will be required for boarding domestic flights and entering certain federal facilities.
Who Needs a REAL ID?
Everyone age 18 or older traveling by air within the U.S. must have a REAL ID or another TSA-approved form of identification (like a valid passport) to fly.
How Do I Know If I Already Have a REAL ID?
Take a look at your driver’s license or state-issued ID. If you see a gold or black star in the upper right corner, you're good to go—your ID is REAL ID-compliant. If there's no star, your ID may not meet the new federal requirements, and you’ll need to upgrade it.
How Do I Get a REAL ID?
You’ll need to visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or equivalent agency in person and bring a few documents with you. These typically include:
- Proof of full legal name
- Date of birth
- Social Security number
- Two documents showing proof of your current address
- Proof of lawful status in the U.S.
Each state may have slightly different requirements, so it’s best to check with your local DMV for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
