Holland America Line Expertise

Holland America Cruises Through Decades of Experience

Our history with Holland America stretches from Statendam in 1980 to Rotterdam in 2026 and includes Alaska, the Panama Canal, Northern Europe, transatlantic crossings and extended voyages lasting up to 28 days. That experience helps us explain what Holland America does especially well, how the different generations of ships compare and when another cruise line may be the better choice.

A Cruise Line With a Distinct Personality

Holland America Often Appeals to Travelers Who Care About the Journey

Holland America combines mid-size ships, destination-focused itineraries, a traditional cruise rhythm and strong live entertainment with a fleet that ranges from smaller classic ships to the newer Pinnacle-class vessels. It can be an especially good fit for Alaska, longer voyages, sea-day lovers and travelers who value where the ship is going as much as the attractions aboard it.

Where Holland America Often Stands Out

What We Like About Holland America

Destination Focus

Holland America often builds itineraries around the places being visited rather than treating every cruise primarily as a resort vacation at sea.

Mid-Size Ships

Even the newest Holland America ships remain more manageable than today's largest resort-style vessels, which many travelers appreciate.

Alaska

Alaska is one of Holland America's historic strengths, with cruise and land programs that can work particularly well for travelers who want to combine the coast with interior Alaska.

Longer Voyages

Grand Voyages, Legendary Voyages, transatlantic crossings and other longer itineraries are an important part of the Holland America product.

Sea Days

Travelers who enjoy settling into shipboard life may find Holland America's quieter daytime rhythm and comfortable public spaces particularly well suited to longer stretches at sea.

Live Music and Evenings

Live music remains an important part of the Holland America evening experience, providing entertainment without turning the ship into a large amusement-style resort.

Holland America Is Not One Ship

Understanding the Fleet

Size, age, dining venues, public spaces and cabin design vary across the fleet. We look at the exact ship rather than making a recommendation based only on the Holland America name.

Newest Generation

Pinnacle Class

Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam represent Holland America's newest and largest generation. They offer the broadest dining selection, contemporary public spaces and a somewhat more modern interpretation of the Holland America experience.

Signature Class

Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam

Signature-class ships sit between the Vista and Pinnacle generations and can offer an appealing balance of ship size, dining options and classic Holland America atmosphere.

Vista Class

Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Zuiderdam

These ships are especially familiar to many longtime Holland America travelers and continue to operate a wide range of destination-rich itineraries, including Alaska and longer international voyages.

Smaller Classic Ships

Volendam and Zaandam

The remaining R-class ships provide a smaller, more traditional Holland America experience that can be especially appealing on unusual itineraries where the destination matters more than having the newest ship.

Fare and Upgrade Choices Matter

Have It All and Club Orange

Holland America offers optional ways to bundle benefits or add amenities, but the value depends on the sailing, price and how the traveler actually cruises.

Have It All

Have It All fares may combine items such as beverages, Wi-Fi, specialty dining and shore-excursion credit, with specific inclusions depending on the fare and promotion in effect. Rather than assuming the package is automatically a good value, we compare the current terms with what the traveler would realistically purchase separately.

Club Orange

Club Orange is a paid upgrade program that can provide priority benefits, dining advantages and other amenities. The experience differs by ship, so the value can be quite different on a Pinnacle-class vessel than on another class. We evaluate it for the specific ship and sailing.

Holland America Around the World

Destinations Where Holland America Can Be Especially Compelling

Alaska

Holland America's long Alaska history, Glacier Bay access and extensive cruise-and-land infrastructure make it one of the first products we compare for many Alaska travelers.

Explore our Alaska expertise

Northern Europe

Norway, the Baltics, Iceland and broader Northern Europe work well with Holland America's destination-focused style and comfortable sea-day rhythm.

South Pacific

Longer roundtrip voyages can reach Hawaii, French Polynesia and other remote islands without requiring travelers to piece together multiple international flights.

Explore our South Pacific voyage

Panama Canal

Holland America has long offered both canal transits and destination-rich Central America itineraries. We have sailed the Panama Canal with Holland America firsthand.

Transatlantic and Europe

Repositioning cruises and extended European combinations can provide exceptional value and work especially well for travelers who enjoy sea days.

Caribbean

Holland America offers a calmer alternative to large attraction-focused ships for travelers who want a more traditional Caribbean cruise experience.

A Particular Holland America Strength

Longer Voyages and Life at Sea

Holland America has played a major role in our own extended cruise history. We have sailed the line on voyages lasting 24 and 28 nights, including a 28-day Alaska Arctic Circle itinerary, and have additional long-voyage experience ahead.

On these trips, the ship is no longer simply transportation between ports. Laundry, storage, dining variety, internet, packages, sea-day pacing and the overall onboard culture become much more important.

We Recommend Holland America When Holland America Fits

Who Is Holland America Best For?

Holland America May Be a Great Fit If...

You care strongly about itinerary, appreciate mid-size ships, enjoy live music and comfortable public spaces, prefer a calmer onboard environment, or are considering Alaska, longer voyages and destination-rich international cruises.

Another Cruise Line May Be Better If...

Your children primarily want waterparks and thrill rides, you want the most contemporary resort-style ship design, you are looking for a true small-ship luxury product, or another cruise line provides a noticeably better itinerary for the destination you want to visit.

An Important Holland America Rule

We Check the Exact Ship, Not Just the Ship Name

Holland America's ships span several generations, and vessels within the fleet may have different cabin renovations, dining venues, entertainment spaces and onboard features. A review of Rotterdam does not automatically describe Westerdam, and an older photo of a cabin may not reflect what a traveler will find after a refurbishment. We look at the specific ship and current configuration before making a recommendation.

Common Holland America Questions

Before You Choose Holland America

Is Holland America a luxury cruise line?

Holland America is generally considered a premium cruise line rather than a traditional small-ship luxury line. It offers elevated dining and service compared with many contemporary products while maintaining larger ships and a broader range of cabin categories.

Is Holland America only for older travelers?

No. The onboard atmosphere is generally calmer than the largest family-resort cruise ships, but the best fit is more about travel style than age. Couples, adult families, multigenerational groups and destination-focused travelers can all enjoy Holland America.

Is Holland America good for families?

It can be for families whose priority is traveling together, seeing the destination and enjoying a more traditional ship. Families seeking large waterparks, thrill rides and extensive amusement-style attractions may prefer another cruise line.

Is Holland America good for Alaska?

Yes, and Alaska is one of the first areas where we routinely compare Holland America. Glacier access, cruise-and-land infrastructure and long experience in the destination are significant strengths, but the exact itinerary still matters.

What is Have It All?

Have It All is Holland America's bundled-fare option. The exact inclusions and promotional benefits can change, so we review the current terms for the actual sailing rather than relying on an older description of the package.

Is Club Orange worth it?

Sometimes. The value depends on the ship, price and which benefits matter to the traveler. Because the Club Orange experience varies across ship classes, we evaluate it on the specific vessel.

Which Holland America ship is best?

There is no universal best ship. Pinnacle-class vessels offer the broadest contemporary Holland America experience, while smaller ships may be preferable for certain itineraries or travelers who value intimacy over additional venues.

Is Holland America good for long cruises?

It can be an excellent fit. Longer and destination-rich voyages are an important part of the line's identity, and our own Holland America experience includes several trips lasting three to four weeks.

Holland America or Celebrity?

Both are premium cruise lines we know well, but they have different personalities. Celebrity generally emphasizes more contemporary ship design and a modern premium atmosphere. Holland America often emphasizes destination depth, traditional cruising, mid-size ships, live music and longer itineraries. We choose between them based on the traveler, ship and itinerary rather than declaring one universally better.

Why book Holland America through an advisor who knows the line?

The differences between ship classes, cabin locations, itineraries, Have It All pricing and optional upgrades can materially change the vacation. Firsthand experience helps us explain those differences and recognize when Holland America is or is not the right fit.
