Northern Europe Cruise Planning

Northern Europe Cruises

Norwegian fjords, Iceland and Greenland, historic Baltic and Scandinavian cities, the British Isles, Arctic wilderness and Northern Lights voyages can all be called Northern Europe — but they create very different vacations.

One Region. Very Different Journeys.

Northern Europe Is Not One Cruise

A week focused on Iceland feels very different from a voyage through the Norwegian fjords. A Baltic itinerary centers more on historic cities and culture, while an Arctic expedition may have no conventional port schedule at all.

You do not need to know every port before you begin. Start by deciding what kind of Northern Europe experience interests you most, and we can help narrow the ships and itineraries from there.

Start With What Excites You

Which Northern Europe Experience Fits You?

These are not rigid categories. Many cruises combine more than one region, but thinking about your primary interest is an easy way to begin.

Norwegian Fjords

Deep fjords, waterfalls, mountain scenery and colorful coastal communities make Norway ideal for travelers who want the landscape itself to be a major part of the trip.

Iceland, Greenland & the North Atlantic

Iceland combines waterfalls, volcanic landscapes and dramatic coastal scenery. Longer voyages can add Greenland, Atlantic Canada or other remote North Atlantic destinations.

Scandinavia & the Baltic

Historic capitals, old towns, architecture and culture become the focus in places such as Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Tallinn, Riga and the Baltic coast.

British Isles

Scotland, Ireland, England and surrounding islands can add castles, rugged coastlines, historic cities and smaller communities to a Northern Europe journey.

Arctic & Northern Lights

Svalbard, far northern Norway and other Arctic routes bring a very different focus — wildlife, remote landscapes, expedition travel or long autumn nights beneath northern skies.

A Few Choices Matter More Than Others

Three Decisions That Shape the Trip

You do not need to compare every sailing. These three questions usually narrow the field quickly.

1

One Region or a Bigger Combination?

A focused Norway or Iceland itinerary gives you more depth. Longer voyages may combine several regions and create a much broader European journey.

2

Summer Scenery or Northern Lights?

Long summer days are ideal for scenery and sightseeing. Northern Lights voyages use the darker part of the year and travel farther north, creating a very different experience.

3

What Kind of Ship and Pace?

A larger premium ship, smaller destination-focused ship, luxury vessel and expedition ship can visit the same broad region in very different ways.

Destination First. Travel Style Next.

Small Ship & Destination Intensive

Smaller ships can reach different ports and often place more emphasis on time ashore, longer stays and destination depth.

Cruise Lines Worth Considering

We do not rank one cruise line as best for all of Northern Europe. The itinerary and travel style should drive the choice.

Premium Ocean Cruising

Celebrity and Holland America are both important Northern Europe options for us. Holland America is particularly strong in Norway and longer regional combinations, while Celebrity offers a polished premium experience across Iceland and other European itineraries.

Smaller & More Destination Focused

Azamara, Oceania and Windstar can be excellent choices when smaller ships, unusual ports, longer stays or a more destination-intensive pace matter.

Arctic, Expedition & Luxury

The farther north you go, the more specialized the product can become. Aurora Expeditions is one we know firsthand, while luxury lines can offer another high-end way to explore northern waters.

Advice Shaped by Being There

Northern Europe Is a Region We Know Firsthand

Our own travels have taken us through Iceland, Norwegian fjords, Baltic and Scandinavian cities, Svalbard, Greenland and farther into the Arctic.

That matters because the difference between two Northern Europe cruises is often not obvious from the itinerary list alone. Ship size, time in port, scenic cruising, season and how far north the voyage travels can change the experience.

We would rather help you identify the right kind of journey than overwhelm you with every sailing available.
